As writers and artists, all too often we focus so much of our energy on Creating that we forget about the impact it will have on the people who will See it.

Consider: How do we want people to FEEL after they experience our work?

That's why people read stories, view art, and even watch movies--for the Feelings it gives them.

"I could care less about the reader. I'm writing this story strictly for myself!"
-- Oh, really? Then why are you posting it in a public place where people can find it? When "I" write strictly for me, I certainly don't post it where other people will see it--not even on my private, friends-only Live Journal. No one sees it but me.

Tell the truth and shame the devil.

-- If you're posting your work where others can see it--even if it's merely a private art/story site like Deviant Art or Y! Gallery, CLEARLY you want other people to see your work and hopefully, like it. Which means that during the creative process, you really ought to consider what you want your readers to feel when they're done reading it:

Touched - tears of joy
Poignant - tears of heartache
Laughter
Inspired
Horny
Embarrassed
Fear
Anger
Loathing
Disgust

To quote Edgar Allen Poe:
~~~~~~~~~
“In the whole composition there should be no word written, of which the tendency, direct or indirect, is not to the one pre-established design. And by such means, with such care and skill, a picture is at length painted which leaves in the mind of him who contemplates it with a kindred art, a sense of the fullest satisfaction.”
Enjoy!
Yes, yes, yes... You said that - but what is the Emotion you're trying to make him FEEL with your story?
... I guess 'the giggles' doesn't count as an emotion. Compassion is probably my main goal emotion. That or pride.
can you become over concerned with your audience, I am not disagreeing with you at all but I have a friend who rejects some of my really good Ideas because it appeals to a limited audience.
I mean I do not write mary sue and put it out for public consumption, but I do write what I want to. We've been arguing about it a lot lately.
Can you become over concerned with your audience...?
YES, especially when you have only a small number of opinions to rely on. This is why I use 4 to 6 test/beta-readers for every story I write. What might not work for one could very well work for the rest.
I have a friend who rejects some of my really good Ideas because it appeals to a limited audience.
Your story doesn't have to appeal to a wide reading audience. It only needs to appeal to YOUR reading audience. Also, experimentation is the only way you'll discover the full extent of your capabilities. Trying things that might not work for some, but does work for others, gives you valuable and usable experience.
I think what I'd like my tales to convey is a sense of hope, or something like that.
