As writers and artists, all too often we focus so much of our energy on Creating that we forget about the impact it will have on the people who will See it.

Consider: How do we want people to FEEL after they experience our work?

That's why people read stories, view art, and even watch movies--for the Feelings it gives them.

"I could care less about the reader. I'm writing this story strictly for myself!"
-- Oh, really? Then why are you posting it in a public place where people can find it? When "I" write strictly for me, I certainly don't post it where other people will see it--not even on my private, friends-only Live Journal. No one sees it but me.

Tell the truth and shame the devil.

-- If you're posting your work where others can see it--even if it's merely a private art/story site like Deviant Art or Y! Gallery, CLEARLY you want other people to see your work and hopefully, like it. Which means that during the creative process, you really ought to consider what you want your readers to feel when they're done reading it:

Touched - tears of joy
Poignant - tears of heartache
Laughter
Inspired
Horny
Embarrassed
Fear
Anger
Loathing
Disgust

To quote Edgar Allen Poe:
~~~~~~~~~
“In the whole composition there should be no word written, of which the tendency, direct or indirect, is not to the one pre-established design. And by such means, with such care and skill, a picture is at length painted which leaves in the mind of him who contemplates it with a kindred art, a sense of the fullest satisfaction.”
Enjoy!
But to what extent should you form your content to the public's interest? You want people who read it to feel something, but to what length should you go to that? Should you do what some people will do and cater to the very whim of the reader to the point they ruin the entire story THEY wanted to write and it now becomes the public's story and not yours? Should you only take that into consideration and continue onto what you want to write about while adjusting smaller portions so it's a little more of what the public eye would want too see? Or should you just blow it off entirely and do your absolute best to make it yours AND make it so it's the best the quality can be?
I hope this long block of text made sense =P
But to what extent should you form your content to the public's interest?
To the extent that an editor will publish your work. :) That's all you need.
You want people who read it to feel something, but to what length should you go to that?
That depends on the individual writer and what they are trying to say. What emotions are they trying to bring out of the reader, light happy ones or dark heavy ones? Only the author knows those answers. The rest is only limited by the author's Skill.
Should you do what some people will do and cater to the very whim of the reader to the point they ruin the entire story THEY wanted to write and it now becomes the public's story and not yours?
How far they need to go depends on the editor / publishing house the writer works for. Some publishers have very strict house rules and some are far more willing to bend.
Should you only take that into consideration and continue onto what you want to write about while adjusting smaller portions so it's a little more of what the public eye would want to see?
Again, that depends on the publishing house / editor you're working with.
Or should you just blow it off entirely and do your absolute best to make it yours AND make it so it's the best the quality can be?
I would do this First and see (after the full manuscript has been turned in) if the publisher wants anything changed.
I see.
Thank you for the answers =P.
What of unpublished stories though? The ones you want the public to see but can't make a dime off of.
What about them?
"I couldn't care less..." (insert mind exploding here).
I'm surprised nobody has noted that.
It's a deliberate affectation. I was well aware that it was Wrong. :)
Think of all those who say, "Don't disrespect me!" Disrespect is an Adjective, Not a Verb, yet this phrase is used all the damned time.
This is a really good point! And I always :giggle: when I see that people claim to be writing "just for themselves". So if that's true, how come I'm reading it too? :confused:
Really lovely Poe quote, he is like totally spot on :nod:
I'm glad you liked the quote. Poe was a literature critic, yet his points are Still accurate today.
...people claim to be writing "just for themselves". So if that's true, how come I'm reading it too?
You wouldn't believe how many people use that as an excuse to post Crap.
:rofl: oh yes, I would believe, I've been reading blogs for ages and it's a typical response to criticism :D
I understand writing "for my own enjoyment" but if it's published than it's not "just for me", there is a big difference :)
